Apart from getting on a plane, food is one of the best means of “travelling” by trying new recipes. It allows us to experience the flavours of different cultures, and the British Isles are a melting pot. From Shepherd's Pie and Sunday Roast, to Chicken Tikka Masala and Doner Kebabs… British food is an expansive cuisine worthy of countless cooking shows (or cookery shows, as they're known across the pond).

Want to try British recipes? You may notice some of your favourite TV chefs use metric weight measurements. This can be a little confusing if you're used to Imperial and Cup measurements.

Having a set of scales that switches back and forth from ounces to grams is also a great investment if you cook a lot of British recipes since they usually measure by weight. I personally have these Escali scales; they're reliable and come in several different colours.

Here are two websites you might like to bookmark to make things easier when using British recipes:

Britain's Best Home Cook.

These shows are all cooking or baking-themed competitions:

The Great British Baking Show

The Great British Bake Off, as it's known in the UK, began with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry judging, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc presenting, and Rupert Penry-Jones narrating. After the BBC sold it to Channel 4, Prue Leith stepped into Mary Berry's shoes, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding replaced Mel and Sue, and Rupert no longer narrates it. But, it's still worth watching. (Even if it isn't as relaxing without Rupert Penry-Jones narrating it). Matt Lucas then went on to replace Sandi Toksvig.

The Great British Baking Show is beloved in the US for how it contrasts to American baking competitions: it isn't as stressful to watch. Instead, the quaint, understated British competition show could even be called relaxing at times.

Stream The Great British Baking Show on Netflix.

Britain's Best Home Cook

Britain's Best Home Cook is a bit like The Great British Baking Show but for overall cooking. It also stars Mary Berry as a judge. Berry is joined by Chris Bavin and Angela Hartnett. Claudia Winkleman hosts.

The Great British Baking Show: Masterclass. BBC.

Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted. National Geographic.

Gordon Ramsay may be well known for his colourful use of language, especially on Hell's Kitchen, but underneath that TV personality is a great chef and gentleman. He is the nicest judge on MasterChef Junior and a father of five. He began studying hotel management at technical college then went on to study French cuisine working under several renowned chefs. After becoming a head chef and winning his first Michelin star, he starred in the television show Boiling Point (Tubi) about transitioning to owning his own restaurant and then in 2004 he starred in Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares where he helped failing restaurants get back on their feet.

You can see the difference between his blunt American television persona by comparing the original UK Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and the US version of the show. Spoiler alert: he's much nicer in the original, though still a touch prickly… but that's his charm, right? He wouldn't be Gordon Ramsay if he wasn't calling someone a “donut.”

Today, you could easily call his restaurants and television shows the Gordon Ramsay empire. He currently has around eighteen restaurants. In total, his restaurants have been awarded 16 Michelin stars.

Gordon Ramsay's Ultimate Cookery Course

If you want to see Gordon Ramsay's take on home cooking, check out this show. Each episode follows a different theme: Getting Started, Cooking with Chili / Spice, Food on a Budget, Real Fast Food, Baking, Slow Cooking, and more.

Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

Produced by National Geographic, this globe-trekking show sees Ramsay visit remote locations where he learns to cook from indigenous peoples. Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted is streaming on Disney +.

Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch

Matilda, also known as Tilly, is Gordon's youngest daughter. This time, she's taking over the kitchen. The first episode sees the family leave the UK for southern California where Tilly cooks a celebratory meal. This fun, vibrant show is fun for foodies and fans of the rambunctious Ramsay family. It's also a great way to get teens excited about healthy eating.

24 Hours to Hell and Back

After years of Kitchen Nightmares in the UK and the US and the similar show Hotel Hell, the pinnacle of this format is 24 Hours to Hell and Back where he turns a failing restaurant around in 24 hours. More often than not, the issues run deeper than the menu. Emotional wounds need healing, too. This show takes place in the US and because so many people recognise him, he often wears disguises when trying a restaurant's food for the first time.
