Cast members in the upcoming crime drama Suspect

Fans of James Nesbitt (Bloodlands, Cold Feet) and Sam Heughan (Outlander) are in for a treat. These two British TV favourites are starring together in an upcoming eight-part crime drama.

What is Suspect About?

In Suspect, James Nesbitt plays detective Danny Frater, a man whose life changes after a routine trip to the morgue for an ID check. Instead of another anonymous corpse, the body turns out to be that of his estranged daughter Christina (Imogen King). Initial findings point to suicide, leading Frater on a journey to find out what was going on in her life and how it could have ended so tragically.

Each episode of the series follows Frater's interactions with a different character as he tries to make sense of his daughter's life. He'll visit her godfather Ryan (Heughan), her best friend, her business partner, her mentor, and her mother. What unfolds is a story of unhappiness and a gradual slide into deliquency.

Frater will also find evidence that suggests the case may not be as straightforward as it initially seemed. During his whirlwind tour of her life, he'll have to untangle conflicting stories and evidence to figure out who really ended his daughter's life, if not her. He'll also have to come to terms with his own fatherly failings and the possibility that he might have played a role in how her life played out.

James Nesbitt in Suspect

Of the role, Nesbitt said:

I could relate to Danny, with his flaws, vulnerabilities and the devastating situation he faces, from the very first moment I picked up the script. Each episode of Suspect is an intensely theatrical double-hander, a psychological battle of wits between Danny and another character who may know something about his daughter's untimely death, and I really can't wait to lock horns with my fellow cast members and to lead this incredible array of acting talent.

What Was the Inspiration for Suspect?

Ulrich Thomsen stars in Forhøret

The series is an adaptation of the Danish show Forhøret. It's available in the US as Face to Face, and you can watch it HERE.

Interestingly, while the premise may sound like a “one and done” kind of series, that hasn't been the case in Denmark. A third season is scheduled for later this year – so if the English-language adaptation does well, we could have more seasons to look forward to.

Who Else is in the Cast for Suspect?

Sam Heughan (Outlander) will star alongside Nesbitt, and one of his recent tweets (above) suggests it will be a fun role for his admirers to watch.

Other cast members include Richard E Grant (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless), Sacha Dhawan (Doctor Who), Joely Richardson (The Tudors), Ben Miller (Professor T), Antonia Thomas (The Good Doctor, Small Axe), Imogen King (Clique, Hotel Portofino), and Niamh Algar (Deceit).

All in all, it's one of the most star-studded casts we've seen among this year's new and upcoming British TV shows. Jo McGrath, executive producer and CCO of Eagle Eye Drama, said of the production:

Suspect has a distinctive narrative architecture which is both incredibly intimate and very intense, which represents an exciting challenge for any actor and I’m sure that’s one of the reasons we have attracted such a high calibre, talented cast.
