Will Sanditon return for Season 2?

Ever since it was announced that Sanditon was cancelled, fans have been calling for it to come back. While there have been little blips of hope, they've generally been crushed pretty quickly. However – we've just seen something that might suggest the wheels are in motion.

Edit: We've now gotten official confirmation that Sanditon will get a second and third season. ITV's Head of Drama Polly Hill said:

I’m so glad that the success of Sanditon in the U.S. has paved the way for its return, and for ITV to continue on this wonderful journey. We know there are many loyal fans of the show in the UK that will be delighted to see its return and that we were able to find a way to bring it back.

What is Sanditon?

Sanditon is based on an unfinished Jane Austen novel. In 1917, her health was failing. While experts aren't in complete agreement about what ultimately ended her life, Addison's disease and Hodgkin's lymphoma are among the most popular hypotheses. Though she continued to work through her illness, her final work, The Brothers, would remain unfinished after 12 chapters.

In the middle of March 1817, she was no longer able to write. On the 18th of March, she wrote that she was turning “every wrong colour” and she was confined to her sofa. By July, she had passed away at the age of 41.

The Brothers would go on to be published, incomplete, as Sanditon in 1925. You can read her original work HERE in a convenient ebook, or HERE at Project Gutenberg for free

Since then, many have attempted to finish her work. Most recently, Sanditon was adapted into an ITV television series by Andrew Davies. There's also a book that finishes the story, based on the version Davies put forth (get it HERE).

Will Kris Marshall return for Sanditon Season 2?

Sanditon tells the story of a spirited young woman and her relationship with the charismatic promoter of a new seaside resort town. It's a story of youthful innocence and enthusiasm meeting up with an upstart town and all its schemes and secrets.

The original series wasn't well-received in the UK, but American audiences loved it, and petitions almost immediately went up to beg for more.

In the US and Canada, PBS Distribution will be the distributor for all three seasons.

Will There Be a Season 2 of Sanditon?

Running a British TV site, we subscribe to a casting call service so we can keep tabs on upcoming productions. This popped up yesterday, suggesting that a Series 2 of Sanditon is forthcoming.

For those who can't read the screenshot below, it says the record was updated on the 15th of January in 2021, and that the status of the project is “pre-production”.  Red Planet Pictures and ITV are listed as production company and network (the same as with Series 1).

Filming is scheduled for Summer 2021 in and around Bristol. Casting announcements will be forthcoming.

Sanditon Series II is listed (on UK Production News) as being in pre-production with a filming date in Summer 2021- apologies for the slightly blurry screenshot, our automatic image optimiser was a bit hard on it

When casting alerts go out, it's usually a pretty sure thing that the production is going forward. Hopefully, that means Sanditon fans will have something to look forward to in late 2021 or early 2022.

May 2021 Update on Sanditon, Series 2 (and 3)

As of May 6th, PBS Masterpiece has officially confirmed that the earlier casting calls were real – because Sanditon will be returning not just for a second season, but a third one, too.

It seems safe to say that the success of Bridgerton has everyone scrambling for more sexy period dramas to make – and with so many people already wanting a second series of Sanditon, it was only natural to revive the project.

  1. I’m not so sure that Sidney deserves Charlotte. I hope Mr. Stringer comes to call. Charlotte said to Lady Denham that when she married, money would not come into it. And then, her friend Lady Susan — let’s see Charlotte with her friend Miss Lamb become the toast of the town while Sidney has to watch. Mmm. So much good stuff!

  2. Brilliant acting and story line. It’s inconceivable that there would not be a season 2. Jane Austin would never approve of this incomplete ending.

  3. I’m a great fan of Sanditon and of Jane Austin and I do hope for a season 2. Jane Austin stories are to have a happy ending!

  4. My husband who doesn’t not like these kind of stories got hooked! : ) But we were so disappointed in the ending. I am a Jane Austin fan and know she would not be happy with the ending…so please continue with Season 2.

  5. Jane Austen’s idyllic stories never stale, and Andrew Davies’ version of Sanditon is in perfect keeping with that tradition. I watched it over and over again and it was as fresh and replete with interest as the first time. So let’s uphold Jane Austen’s other tradition in giving her hero and heroine a happy ending. It is difficult to envision a Season 2 that would equal or surpass Season 1, but in truth, all this true work of art requires to achieve a Da Vinci-like perfection is for true love between Charlotte and Sidney to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and triumph at long last. Please, please, please let there be a season 2!

  7. This is the best theatrical work I have ever seen. It is so real and detailed. This is the true history about any community forming into a town. I watch this season every week. If Sidney, Tom, Lady Denham, Charlotte and the rest of the characters don’t rally to save this story for another
Season, then I know someone else is waiting to steal their historical adventure.

  8. I watched 1st season in 2 days. I could not get enough of the story, scenery and characters. When I saw there was no season 2, I was truly sad especially of the last episode ending so disappointing but it makes you want more. I will be a fan for season 2.

  9. It would be a shame if there wasn’t a season two of Sanditon, great story ,great cast,Would love to see how it ends

  10. You have got to be kidding with this question! Everyone I know who has seen season 1 is waiting with bated breath for a second season and that includes myself! Please go forward in Jane Austen’s memory!!

  11. Love this program. Please season 2!!!
Can’t leave us hanging. It saved me during this pandemic
Characters are fabulous please season 2

  12. I just loved the show and characters.
I am so hoping that it returns. I am such a huge fan of
Sanditon! Yes! Yes! Yes!! I am anticipating the next
    Season!

  13. Absolutely, a Season 2 is imperative. The build up relationship with Charlotte and Sidney must continue. Albeit his new loveless relationship with Ms. C will be the intrigue the story needs only to to be with Charlotte in the end..true love. Now the popular interest with Bridgerton, Sanditon brings another fascinating show of the Regecy Period. Jame Austen would want Season 2.

  14. I loved both Rose Williams and Theo James as the actress and actor who portrayed the characters in the show. They, along with the rest of the cast, along with the costume designers, and musicians really brought the story to life. During such a difficult year that we all endured in 2020, and as we all move into a more positive future, let’s all hope a second season can fulfill Jane Austin’s mission or dream and end her story as she would have, with the heroine, Charlotte, growing and learning and eventually ending up with her soulmate, Sidney,

  15. I am excited! I loved the show, watched it 3 times even though I was mad about the ending. I hope they wrap things up somewhat in the second season and not leave any cliffhangers like they did on season one. No telling if they will get a third season!

  16. I didn’t expect to love the show – but then i DID! Not to step on noses – but I did think the casting was not good for the part of Charlotte Heywood (played by Rose Williams) I felt her character would have been much more interesting played by someone who did not show every feeling on her face – she made TOO many faces, and talked too much. There were several times in her dealings with Sidney Parker – where she should have vehemently told him off in no uncertain terms – instead, she seemed to constantly beg for his time, attention and forgiveness. She needed to take a lesson from the heroine in Pride and Predjudice (BBC) and show him the door until he humbly begged her forgiveness

  17. Definitely I’m a huge fan and season 1 ending is totally unsatisfactory. Jane Austen stories always have happy endings.

    • Yes. 1000 times yes! I watched this show recommended after completing Bridgerton and fell in love instantly! I watched it a week ago and have watched Season 1 7 or 8 times through since. The writing, the acting, the directing is so compelling and so artful that I’m praying and waiting anxiously for Season 2!
