October brings a number of new series on Acorn TV, along with the continuation of a couple others that began in August/September. Perhaps the biggest news is that we're getting another season of Manhunt – but as usual, there's a bit of something coming for all tastes.

If you don't currently have an Acorn TV subscription, you can sign up on their website HERE. If you have a smart TV that isn't compatible with their own app (like a Samsung) or if you prefer to subscribe through Amazon's Prime Video service, you can sign up HERE instead.

Either way, you get a free 7-day trial, and both offer easy online cancellation if you decide it's not for you. Both options have the same programming, though some people on slower internet connections have reported slightly smoother streaming on Amazon (and occasionally, a delay of a few hours for new programming to appear).

Mr. Palfrey of Westminster

Mr. Palfrey of Westminster (1984/85)

Alec McCowen (Travels with My Aunt) plays a mild-mannered “civil servant” who's actually a master spy. The series is a bit more cerebral than was typical of the spy shows in that time period, and many compare it to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

This one was on Acorn TV some time ago, and weirdly, it still appears to be available to those who subscribe via Amazon.

Martin Clunes in Manhunt on Acorn TV in October

Manhunt: The Night Stalker

Martin Clunes returns to play former London Metropolitan Police detective DCI Colin Sutton. This season dramatises the real story of the investigation into a burglar and serial rapist whose 17-year streak left elderly South Londoners living in fear. Sutton arrived late to the investigation, but he managed to solve the case in just weeks.

If you don't like the way typical true crime-based dramas tend to build up the criminals as masterminds, this series is the antidote. Instead of elevating the criminals, the producers have been careful to focus on the diligent efforts of investigators.

  1. Any idea when or if Candice Renoir seasons three on ‘til morning might arrive on Acorn?

    • Thank you to Deborah H. She also is looking forward to additional series of Candice Renoir. There ARE nine series. This series is so well done: the acting, plot twists, comic delivery, drama. I miss this series very much and hopefully look forward to more.

  2. Why do you persist in describing Canadian (Republic of Doyle), Australian (My Life is Murder), and French (Family Business) programs as “British TV shows”? They’re not.

    • They say “I Heart British TV”, “British TV premieres”, etc as in, I believe, what is viewable in the UK, and not necessarily what was filmed in UK/has British actors.

  3. When is Dr Martin returning to the screen? I love that series! I also love Mid Summer murders, and so many more.

  4. So very happy to have access to these wonderful British programs. We live in Vancouver Canada – our TV provider just gave us access to Acorn. We depend on U.S. PBS for great UK programs.

    • Hello Suzanne… saw your comment! We also live in Vancouver Canada and I just live watching all of these British shows but can only wait for PBS and mostly re-runs. May I ask how do you get your TV provider to give you access to Acorn TV…we have Telus as our Provider!

      • Hi Theresa. I apologize, just saw your question now. Just call Telus, ask them to give you access to Acorn TV. We got emails about it about 5-6 wks ago. Be prepared, I had to explain this to 2 Telus reps as they had no idea about it. When they checked they found it. Costs $8 p month but when I asked what tv channels we r paying for, discovered paying separately for Crave, so cancelled & bill went down! Also Telus Acorn is good but doesn’t provide all of programs u can find searching Acorn online, fairly limited but a lot better than nothing. Enjoyed Manhunt, London Kills, Anzac Girls**. There is some junk too. TV we have access to here is quite pathetic. CBC used to produce some good programs but now just weird junk, quite sad. Good luck

  5. I just watched the most fun Australian series called Upper Middle Bogdon. An anesthesiologist married to an architect finds she is not the biological daughter of her very posh mother and discovers her other family are drag racers. I haven’t laughed si much in ages, and SO bummed there are only 3 season with 8 episodes each!!!

    • Yes-
      Soon I hope-
I love Murdoch Mysteries &didn’t know there were going to new seasons.
      Will you let us know?

    • Yes, I think so too!! Sure looks like Robbie to me:-) I miss that show so much! Just finished re-watching the whole thing from Morse to Lewis! Waiting on Endeavor, patiently! We just love British telly!

  6. I can’t wait to see more episodes of Midsomer Murders, and finally, they are here, but when will the fifteen seasons of Murdoch Mysteries be avaiable for viewing?
