Right now, a lot of fans are wondering whether there will be a Shetland, season 7. Will Douglas Henshall return to play the role of DI Jimmy Perez? Will people ever stop getting murdered in and around the Shetland Islands?
Luckily, there's good news on that front. Not only is Shetland definitely returning for a season 7 – they started filming it almost instantly upon wrapping up season 6 filming.
What is Shetland About?
Shetland is a Scottish mystery series based on the Shetland novels of author Anne Cleeves. It follows DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) as he investigates gruesome crimes on the Shetland Isles.
Perez is dedicated to his job, and he has a strong moral compass that's forever driving him to do right by his community. The show also deals with his personal life, and those he works with.
What's Happening in Season 7 of Shetland?
**We've written this in a way that avoids any actual spoilers, but if you're far behind and you'd rather not get a sense of what's happening as we approach season 7, you may wish to skip ahead to the next section of this post.**
Season 6 saw DI Jimmy Perez in a period of emotional turmoil following loss and professional upheaval. His desire to do the right thing often makes his life harder than it has to be.
The main investigation of the series involved the murder of a prominent local politician's husband who'd been murdered on his own doorstep in the middle of the day. We also saw the return of a sinister figure from season 4. Many viewers have recommended re-watching season 4 if you've forgotten things since then.
Need to get caught up on past seasons of Shetland? Check it out HERE on BritBox. Keep in mind that if you subscribe through Amazon, they combine seasons 1 and 2. All the episodes are there, they're just not organised correctly.
Who's Returning for Season 7 of Shetland?
All the main cast members are expected to return in season 7 of Shetland. This includes Douglas Henshall as DI Perez, Mark Bonnar (Catastrophe) as Duncan Hunter, Alison O'Donnell (Holby City) as DS Alison ‘Tosh' McIntosh, Steven Robertson (Being Human) as DC Sandy Wilson, and Erin Armstrong (World's End) as Cassie Perez.
We've yet to see any news about guest stars for season 7, but we'll update this if we hear any details.
Shetland Season 7: Premiere Date & Where to Watch
At the end of season 5, Shetland was renewed for two more seasons. Because of pandemic-related delays, the team behind the series cleverly arranged to film seasons 6 and 7 back-to-back to help make up for lost time.
Back in October, Douglas Henshall confirmed on Twitter that they'd finished their Shetland Islands-based filming for season 7. From there, they moved south to Glasgow to continue the production.
We are wrapped on Shetland. Production now moves to Glasgow for the rest of season 7. As ever thank you to the people here for your help, support, and patience we couldn’t do it without you. #shetland

For now, there's no official season 7 premiere date for the UK, the US, or anywhere else. Based on the production dates, we'd expect to see new episodes anytime between spring to winter of 2022.
It's unknown whether they're releasing it as soon as it's ready, or whether they'll hold back a while to keep a year between the seasons. Obviously, we'll be crossing our fingers in hopes that the episodes will come sooner rather than later – and we'll update this post as soon as we know more.
What we DO know is that season 7 of Shetland will premiere on BBC One (as with previous seasons), and in the US it's quite likely the new episodes will air on BritBox (as all recent seasons have done).
Read the Shetland Novels by Ann Cleeves
On the whole, Shetland is based on Shetland novels by Ann Cleeves, but only the first two seasons were adapted from the books. In series 3, they started doing longer six-episode storylines based on original stories with her characters.
As with all the other recent seasons, it's believed season 7 will continue on with another original story that picks up where season 6 left off.
Want to read the Shetland novels to see how they compare? We've included the full list in order below:
- Raven Black (Series 2, Episodes 1 & 2)
- White Nights
- Red Bones (Series 1)
- Blue Lightning (Series 2, Episodes 5 & 6)
- Dead Water (Series 2, Episodes 3 & 4)
- Thin Air
- Cold Earth
- Wild Fire
Ann Cleeves has stated that there will be no additional Shetland novels in the future. The book series is complete.
If you do read the books, you'll notice quite a few differences between the books and TV series. Some characters are similar, but the television adaptation is more about capturing the spirit of the series rather than strictly adapting the books.
Author Ann Cleeves has commented on the changes before, saying:
“Television is an art that’s different from prose and once I’ve given my permission for the adaptation, I have to trust the artists involved. They deserve to be allowed the freedom to develop their own creative vision, just as I’ve been allowed to develop mine.”
