As we approach the end of the year, we like to look back on what's happened in the world of British TV over the last 12 months. 2021 programming was still heavily impacted by all the shutdowns, additional costs, and scheduling conflicts of the pandemic – but there were some good shows that managed to make their way onto our screens.

In this post, we'll take a look at the best new shows to hit PBS Masterpiece this year – and for the sake of uniformity (since PBS stations vary widely in terms of their local offerings), we'll be discussing the PBS Masterpiece channel over on Amazon. Your local station may not have aired all of these, and some may no longer be on your PBS Passport – but they ARE on the Amazon channel here in the US.

Because this list is relatively short compared to our Acorn TV and BritBox lists (mentioned above), we've also included some of the new Walter Presents titles that were added to PBS Masterpiece over the course of the year. Walter Presents shows are similar to the kind of shows you'd find on PBS – the primary difference being that they're European shows filmed in other languages.

  1. Yes, we’d expect that of any dedicated British TV fan. As we mentioned at the beginning, these are just what was NEW on PBS Masterpiece’s Amazon channel in 2021. Father Brown and Midsomer Murders do not stream there. Those are exclusive to BritBox for streaming purposes.

  2. Rubbish list filled with non-English-speaking series. All these “Walter” things look GREAT until you click & realize you have to READ the entire thing. Without dubbing, how are they “British”?

    • Roughly 3/4 of the list is in English – and we did specifically say at the beginning of the list, “Because this list is relatively short compared to our Acorn TV and BritBox lists (mentioned above), we’ve also included some of the new Walter Presents titles that were added to PBS Masterpiece over the course of the year.”

We know those shows aren’t British, but many of our readers enjoy them.

    • Roughly 3/4 of the list is made up of English language shows. We did specifically say at the beginning that we included some non-English Walter Presents shows since the list of British shows was a bit short – but it doesn’t sound like you enjoy reading.

    • Exactly !!!! Why when you go to “language” does it say English yet it’s speaking some other !!!? Why even have the language feature ????

  3. All creatures great and small is the most awesome series I’ve ever watched. So happy they have a season 2 and are planning a season 3.

    • Catherine’s right – both are lovely shows, but neither had new episodes on PBS Masterpiece’s Amazon channel in 2021. It would be great if they added another season of World on Fire to their Amazon channel when it’s available, though!

  4. The Belgium version of Professor T is far superior to the British version. All of the actors are terrific. We have watched all 3 seasons of the Belgium version at least four times. Itdoes not get stale
